Murphy is a charming North Texas town with a lot of character. It is small and quaint but every bit as lovely and appealing as the other towns in the North Texas area. Nearing 20,000 residents, this wonderful Texas city has a climate that never disappoints plus big characters, tons of antiquity and fun times which, in general, abound in Texas…making it an ideal place to learn more about culture, the arts and American history.
Officially established with the State of Texan in 1958, the City of Murphy has a history dating back to the mid 1800’s when settlers first arrived in the area. First named “Old Dector”, then “Maxwell’s Branch”, the town finally received the name “Murphy” in 1888 in honor of William Murphy who offered land for railway tracks and a depot.
Built in 1901, the First Baptist Church of Murphy is still in use offering a wealth of community support opportunities and parishioner services. The city is also greatly involved in the recreation and activities for the community and organizes Picnics By the Pond, Moonlight Movies, Summer Concerts and so much more.
If you are in Murphy, you simply must take a drive to Rockwall. You can’t miss their downtown area, which is a great place to spend a family day, date night, or to spend a day as a tourist popping in and out of shops and diners of the Main Street area. In addition, those who love to be on the water, in the water, or near the water. Rockwall's Harbor is both a commercial and recreational spot set on the shores of the stunning Lake Ray Hubbard. The harbor holds performances and activities and is known for its live music and fun atmosphere. There are also lovely places to get a beverage or grab a bite to eat while taking in the stunning lake views.
